AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- On a cold and blustery day, the Union College baseball team had difficulty scoring runs and ended up losing 4-0 and 3-2 to Rochester in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park.
The Dutchmen have now dropped four games in a row and are 14-16 on the season with a 10-8 record in Liberty League action. Rochester improves to 18-14 (11-7 LL) with the two wins.
Despite recording seven hits in the first game, Union was unable to score a run as the Yellowjackets posted a 4-0 shutout.
Colin Nye pitched the complete game for the Dutchmen, conceding only two earned runs in the outing.
In game two, Rochester used an error and a hit to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Union then scored its first run of the day in the bottom of the fourth. With
Joe Ganim on third, a dropped fly ball during
Chris O'Brien's at-bat allowed Ganim to tie the game up. Later in the inning, with runners on the corners,
Will Bellamy went to steal second, which gave
Sean Cullen an opposed attempt to steal home for the 2-1 lead.
Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets took back the lead in the sixth inning with a two-run homer to go up 3-2. The Dutchmen recorded three hits in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to bring any runners home and stranded two on base. Union then only recorded one more hit before the end of the game as Rochester held on for the 3-2 win.
Union and Rochester finish off the weekend series tomorrow, April 28, back at Shuttleworth Park. First pitch is scheduled for noon (ET).
