AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- The Union College baseball team lost 11-7 and 8-4 in a doubleheader to Rochester on Sunday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park.
With the two losses Union falls to 14-18 on the season and 10-10 in Liberty League play, while Rochester improves to 20-14 (13-7 LL).
After two low scoring affairs on Saturday, the first game of the day saw a combined nine runs in the first two innings. Rochester got on the board first with a lone run in the first inning, but Union responded with its best inning of the weekend in the top of the second.
Kevin Chaimowitz hit a two-run homer to put Union on top 2-1, before
Joe Ganim hit a two-RBI double to score
Matt Toy and
Jake Rowland for a 4-1 lead. Unfortunately, Rochester hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second to take a 5-4 lead.
Sean Cullen added two more runs with a home run in the fifth, and Ganim batted in an additional run in the sixth, but a five-run inning by the Yellowjackets in the fifth would be too much for the Dutchmen to overcome.Â
In the second game, Union got on the board first with a lone run in the top of the first. However, Rochester responded in the bottom of the inning with a three-run home run and an additional run off an error to take a 4-1 lead. The Yellowjackets would never reliquinsh the lead as Union only added solo runs in the second, sixth, and seventh innings.Â
Union returns to Shuttleworth Park for a midweek contest against Middlebury on Tuesday, April, 28. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. (ET).
