SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team dropped its first Liberty League match of the season on Friday night, falling to regionally ranked Vassar College by an 8-1 score at Sportime Tennis Club.
 
Union (5-3, 2-1 Liberty League) battled hard against Vassar (7-5, 3-2 Liberty League), who entered the week ranked 20th in the ITA Northeast Regional Rankings, coming just short in multiple matches.
 
Sophomore Max Egna picked up the lone victory for the Dutchmen on the afternoon defeating Mihajlo Ivanovic 6-2, 6-3 in their fifth-singles match.
 
The Dutchmen fell behind 3-0 after doubles play despite coming close in a pair of matches. Junior David Bond and freshman Ioannis Binopoulos went to a tiebreaker before falling 8-7 (7-4) to Nicolas Demaria and Matthew Yee at second doubles, while Egna and his brother Austin Egna fell 8-6 to Allen Sokolov and Jeremy Auh at first singles.
 
In singles play, Austin Egna took his fourth singles match against Sokolov to a tiebreaker before falling in a very closely contested match, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-7), while freshman Cameron Klepper also came very close before dropping a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) decision to Jamie Anderson at third singles.
 
Union returns to action tomorrow, when the Dutchmen continue Liberty League play against ITA #36 Hobart College beginning at noon.
