SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team battled hard against another nationally ranked opponent on Saturday afternoon, but the Dutchmen eventually came up short in an 8-1 loss to ITA/Oracle #36 Hobart College in a Liberty League matchup at the Sportime Tennis Club.
Despite the lopsided score, Union (5-4, 2-2 Liberty League) took three singles matches to three sets and also saw a pair of doubles contests decided by tiebreakers as well, as the Dutchmen battled hard in their fourth straight match against a regionally ranked opponent and third nationally ranked foe in the last four outings.
Sophomore
Austin Egna posted the lone victory of the day for the Dutchmen, defeating Thomas Shung in a fifth-singles supertiebreaker, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7). Two other singles matches went three sets as well, as sophomore
Max Egna fell to Jack Ledford, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, in fourth-singles play and senior
Zach Kaplan dropped a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 match to Joe Mallon at sixth singles.
Union also came close to grabbing a pair of doubles points as well. The Egnas came just a few points in their first-doubles tiebreaker against Alan Dubrovsky and Walker Anderson, falling 8-7 (7-5), while the second-doubles tandem of freshman
Ioannis Binopoulos and junior
David Bond also came up just short in an 8-7 (7-4) defeat.
The Dutchmen will return to action on Monday with a non-conference match at SUNY Oneonta beginning at 4 p.m.
