ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Union College baseball team lost game one, 4-3, before bouncing back to win game two, 6-4, against RIT on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
Union out-hit RIT, 18-11, on the day, including an 8-4 advantage in the first game despite the loss. With the split, Union is now 6-8 on the season and 4-2 in Liberty League action, while RIT sits at 8-9 (3-3 LL).
Sean Cullen led the Dutchmen with a .667 average on the day, recording four hits, two doubles, six total bases and scoring one run.
Joe Ganim and
Colin Kelly both went 3-for-7 (.429) between the games, and
Elias Kuhns was the fourth Dutchmen to hit over .300 on the day with two hit sin six at-bats.
On the mound,
Chris Murdock threw a team-high 5.2 innings, while
James Salemme saw 4.1 innings of work and
Dominic Nardone threw for 4.0 innings.
In game one, Union took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, as Cullen scored on a fielder's choice and Kuhns crossed home thanks to a single by Amoroso. Kelly then hit a sac-fly in the fifth to score Ganim and put the Dutchmen up 3-0. Unfortunately, RIT scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game up, and a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Tigers to score a run and squeak out the win.
Union's hot hitting continued in the second game, and the Dutchmen got on the board right away in the first inning. RIT tied the game up in the third, but Union took a 3-1 lead in the fourth tanks to runs from Labeck and Amoroso. In the bottom of the sixth, a home run by the Tigers again evened the score, but the Duthcmen would respond in the seventh with three runs to take a 6-3 lead. Union put together four-consecutive hits to score the three runs, as
Jack Koch doubled to score Ganim, Kellyy singled to score Koch and Cullen singled to score Kelly.
The Tigers would score one run in the eighth to make the score 6-4, but the Dutchmen kept RIT from any further scoring to salvage the split.
Union and RIT return to Tiger Stadium to finish off the Liberty League series tomorrow, April 7. First pitch is scheduled for noon (ET).
