Dutchmen fall in doubleheader to RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Union College baseball team suffered 2-1 and 4-7 losses in a doubleheader to RIT on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.

Despite the losses, the Dutchmen (6-10, 4-4 Liberty League) out-hit and had less defensive errors than the Tigers (10-9, 5-3 LL). As a team, Union hit .254 on the day, with 16 hits, compared to just .214 by the Tigers who had 12 hits. Union also only committed one error to RIT's four.

J.R. Lopez led the Dutchmen going 2-for-5 (.400) between the two games. Jack Koch had a team-high three hits on the day, but finished with a .333 average. Josh Garber led the pitching corps with 6.1 innings of work, giving up only a single earned run in the first game of the day.

RIT took 2-0 lead in the game one, scoring off a single and an error in the third inning. The Dutchmen responded in the bottom of the third thanks to a double by Anthony Amoroso which scored Joe Ganim. Unfortunately, it would be the only run that Union would score in the contest as the Tigers would hold on for the 2-1 win.

Compared to the first game which only saw three pitchers, game two saw a total of 10 pitchers take the mound. The Dutchmen got on the board first this time, as a single from Matt Toy drove in two runs in the second inning. The Tigers then took the lead in the third, scoring three runs on two hits. RIT then added to its lead in the fourth with four more runs to go up 7-2. Union continued to battle back, eventually scoring twice in the seventh, thanks to runs from Chris O'Brien and Koch. After the two runs from the Dutchmen, the Tigers used two pitchers to combine for the final 7 outs to finish off the 7-4 win.

Union returns to Shuttleworth Park for a pair of midweek games, hosting Elms on Tuesday, April 9, at 6 p.m. (ET), and SUNY Poly on Wednesday, April 10, at 5 p.m.
