AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- The Union College baseball team posted a combined 11 hits in the fifth and sixth innings in a 13-1 win over Elms College on Tuesday night at Shuttleworth Park.
The Dutchmen improve to 7-10 on the season while the Blazers fall to 3-16.
Elms actually scored the first run of the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Blazers' lead would last until the fourth inning when
Sean Cullen hit a solo home run over the left field wall to tie the game up. Then the Union bats opened up in the fifth.
Andy Labeck led-off with a base on balls, which was followed up by a
Will Bellamy home run.
Jack Koch would later double to score
J.R. Lopez and
Justin Cabanas. Koch would then make it 6-1 after stealing third and advancing home after an error to third by the catcher. Singles from
Elias Kuhns and Labeck at the end of the inning would then give Union an 8-1 lead heading into the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Chris Symington and Cullen both had RBI singles, Kuhns picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice and
Colin Kelly had an RBI double to extend the Dutchmen's lead to 12-1.
Union final run of the game came in the eighth, as
Joey Palko scored as
Jake Rowland reached on a fielder's choice.
On the mound,
Tommy Scherrer picked up his first collegiate win, throwing 6.0 innings.
Chad Salazar,
Steve Acquario and
Charlie Hoover all threw 1.0 each in relief, and all three kept Elms hitless in the final three innings.
Union returns to Shuttleworth Park, tomorrow, April 10, for a nonconference game against SUNY Poly. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. (ET).
