Weekend Highlights
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College softball team swept St. Lawrence, winning 2-1 in game one, and 6-3 in game two to improve to 3-1 in Liberty League play, Sunday at Alexander Field.
Game One: Union 2, St. Lawrence 1:
Sophomore
Stuart Buxton scored both runs as the Dutchwomen topped the Saints, 2-1 after an overthrow of third base allowed her to score the winning run. On the hill, sophomore
Makayla Koehler struck out four batters seven innings to earn her second win of the season.
Union got on the board first when a single by first-year
Julia Boule plated Buxton. The Saints homered in the top of the fifth to tie the game 1-1 heading into the seventh.
With Buxton on second, first-year
Julissa Malana hit a ground ball to the third baseman, who threw her out at first base. The first baseman then threw back to third to try and get Buxton out, but the ball sailed over the St. Lawrence players head and allowed Buxton to cross home plate to secure a 2-1 victory for the Dutchwomen in walk-off fashion.
Game Two: Union 6, St. Lawrence 3:
The Saints led 3-0 after the top of the third inning, but six-unanswered runs by the Dutchwomen proved the difference as Union completed the sweep over St. Lawrence with a 6-3 win. Buxton went 4-4 from the plate, driving in two runs and scoring one to lead her team to victory. Koehler got her second win of the day on the mound as well, striking out three batters and allowing only two hits in four innings.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Buxton singled to right center field to plate junior
Kayla Fisher and get the hosts on the board. Two batter later, Buxton scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-2 after the third inning.
In the fourth, Fisher drove in junior
Bailey Kross with a single to level the score at 3-3. The next batter, Koehler, laid down a bunt that scored first-year
Lindsey Podlaski from third to give Union a lead that proved insurmountable. A Buxton double to left field drove in Fisher to make the score 5-3, and a Malana ground out allowed Koehler to score and put the game away.
Union returns to action Tuesday, April 9, hosting SUNY Oneonta for a pair of games at Alexander Field starting at 3:30 p.m. (ET).
