Men's Soccer Opens Conference Play with 3-2 Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- First-year Evan Farr scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute as the Union College men's soccer team defeated Skidmore College by a 3-2 score in the Liberty League opener at College Park Field on Friday evening. The team remains unbeaten with an 8-0 record and starts conference play at 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Dutchmen opened up scoring in the first half, with senior Jeremy Conn scoring his seventh goal of the season in the 33rd minute. The forward took passes from seniors Danny Cannon and and Salvador Lopez Jr. and found the back of the net to put the Dutchmen up early.
  • Skidmore replied soon after, scoring their first goal from Ted Roach just five minutes later to tie the game. Skidmore scored three minutes after that to secure the lead going into halftime, 2-1.
  • Junior Poom Mera received a pass from Lopez Jr. in the 60th minute to score and tie the game. Mera scored in the lower left of the goal to let it in and make it 2-2.
  • The Dutchmen went ahead for the last time with less than 17 minutes remaining in regulation, when Farr scored his third goal of the season off a pass from Conn to make it 3-2.
  • Skidmore outshot Union 24-12 on the day. Junior goalkeeper Trevor Krupp stopped five shots to earn his fifth win of the season.
  • With the win, the Union College men's soccer team improves to an impressive 8-0 on the season. This record ties the 2007 team for the longest winning streak to start a season in school history.
  • With his two assists, Lopez is already just two assists away from tying the school record of 11 set by George Garivaltis '78 in 1975.

WHAT'S NEXT:

The Dutchmen return to College Park Field with another Liberty League match against Vassar College on Saturday, September 28th. Kickoff is slated for 2 pm.
