MADISON, N.J. – The Union College field hockey team had the better of play in the final 30 minutes after a slow opening half, but FDU-Florham managed one goal in each of the final two quarters to deal the Dutchwomen a 2-0 defeat in non-conference action at Robert Shields Field on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday's game was a tale of two halves, as FDU-Florham (6-2) dominated the first half but did not score. Then it was Union's (2-3) turn to have many of the offensive chances in the second half, and yet it was the Devils that scored the only two goals.
The first half of the game was all Devils, as the home team outshot the Dutchwomen by an 11-0 margin. But thanks to eight saves from junior
Heather Poisson (including a penalty stroke stop less than three minutes into the game) as well as a defensive save, Union went into halftime knotted up at zero.
Just 68 seconds out of the intermission, however, Allison Attardi got the Devils on the board with a shot from the right side. Union increased the offensive pressure after that point, firing six shots at the FDU net and earning many of the quarter's best offensive chances.
The visitors continued the offensive pressure into the fourth frame, but could not get the game-tying goal. Then with less than three minutes remaining, the Devils added an insurance goal to put the game out of reach.
Poisson finished the day with 10 saves, as Union was outshot by an 16-11 margin, even though the visitors posted an 11-5 edge in shots during the second 30 minutes of play. The visitors also earned 10 penalty corners to FDU's eight on the afternoon.
Union will head back to New Jersey on Wednesday when the Dutchwomen take on William Paterson University beginning at 7 p.m.
