Dutchmen win in OT thriller

CANTON, N.Y. – After facing a 3-1 deficit to start the third period, the Union College men's hockey team battled back to a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory against St. Lawrence on Friday night.
 
The Dutchmen (6-13-1, 4-5-0 ECACH) had a blistering third period in which they out-shot the Saints (3-14-3, 1-7-0 ECACH), 17-7, to force the extra period of hockey.
 
St. Lawrence scored the opening goal at the 14:04 mark of the first period, but Josh Kosack answered back in the first 47 seconds of the second period to tie the game up. However, St. Lawrence would go on to score twice in the second period to take a 3-1 lead into the third period.
 
Through the first 40 minutes of play, St. Lawrence had out-shot Union, 19-16. The Dutchmen would then go on to more than double their shot total in the third period alone. Ryan Sidorski and Christian Sanda scored in the first six minutes of the period to tie the game at 3-3. Unfortunately, SLU's Ryan Garvey scored his third goal of the game at the 14:33 mark to put St. Lawrence back up, 4-3.
 
During a delayed penalty in the final five minutes of the period, Sanda scored his second goal of the game to tie it back up, 4-4. In the extra frame, fellow first-year Chaz Smedsrud scored his third goal of the year on the power play to finish off the Union comeback.
