POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Union College won the first and third quarters, but Vassar College outscored the Dutchwomen 50-16 in the second and fourth frames as the Brewers cruised to a 72-42 victory in Liberty League women's basketball action on Friday night at AFC Gymnasium.
Senior
Elly Vaughan and sophomores
Laura Vinton and
Amber Raisner led Union (9-12, 6-9 Liberty League) with 10 points apiece. Vaughan added five rebounds and three blocks, while Vinton chipped in five boards and Raisner corralled four caroms and blocked two shots as well.
Union finished the night shooting 35.6 percent (16 of 45) but the defense was effective, limiting Vassar to 38.9 percent shooting. However, Vassar took 27 more shots than its counterparts as Union turned the ball over 30 times and Vassar converted those into 26 points.
The visitors did not trail in the opening frame after hitting three of their first four shots to jump out to an early 7-2 lead, with Raisner hitting a three to put the Dutchwomen up by five. Union built the lead back up to five later in the frame thanks to a pair of free throws by junior
IreLee Ferguson and a layup by freshman
Megan Lee, before a late three decreased the lead to two (13-11) after 10 minutes.
Union grabbed its last lead of the day following a bucket by Vinton that put the visitors up 15-14 early in the second. The Dutchwomen hung with Vassar (16-6, 12-3 Liberty League) for the next few minutes before a 13-3 run to end the quarter gave the Brewers a 34-22 edge at the half.
The Dutchwomen limited the Brewers to 4-of-17 shooting in the third quarter, but Union could only shave two points off the deficit. Raisner led the team with five points during the quarter, which ended with back-to-back layups by sophomore
Anna Metcalf and Vaughan to get Union within 10 (45-35) headed to the fourth.
Vassar came out strong in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 of the first 15 points to take a 58-37 lead with 7:16 remaining and squash any chances of a Union comeback.
The Dutchwomen will finish off their tour of the Hudson Valley tomorrow, when the team heads to Bard for a 2 p.m. tipoff with the Raptors.
