SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior captain
Kerry Lyne led all scorers with four points and classmate
Graham Goldheim stopped 14 shots to earn the win in his first collegiate start as the #11 Union College men's lacrosse team started the 2020 season with a 12-2 win over Endicott College on a raw Wednesday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Lyne led the way for Union (1-0) with three goals and an assist, while junior
Aidan Flood matched Lyne with three goals of his own. Junior
Kieran McGovern added two goals and classmate
Matthew Georgiades also had a multi-point game with a goal and an assist to help give
Derek Witheford '11 a victory in his head coaching debut.
The weather was cold but Union came out red-hot to start the contest, scoring the only six goals of the opening quarter to essentially put the game away early. After firing nine unsuccessful shots over the first seven minutes of the game, senior
Michael Sands finally got the Dutchmen on the board when he batted home the rebound of a shot by junior
Hayden Frey with 7:45 left.
That goal finally blew the lid off the Endicott cage, as Union followed up by scoring on five of their next seven possessions to take a 6-0 lead. Lyne had three of those five goals, while Flood and McGovern added one apiece during the first frame. In the first quarter alone, Union fired an amazing 22 shots at the Endicott net, while Goldheim made five saves at the other end to keep the Gulls off the board.
The scoring slowed considerably in the second quarter, as Goldheim and Endicott's Austin Fournier both made six saves apiece. Ben Clark got the visitors on the board with 10:51 to go, but Union responded just over a minute later, as Flood scored his second of the game just nine seconds into the home team's only man-up chance of the game.
The Dutchmen then closed the door with five unanswered goals in the third quarter, including a lightning-quick three goals in 1:57 from McGovern and juniors
Keaton McCann and
Quinn Helmig. Georgiades added another just 70 seconds after McGovern to give Union a 12-1 advantage after three quarters and the home team cruised from there.
Goldheim played well in his first collegiate start, making 11 saves in the first half to keep his team in front and finishing with a career-best 14 stops on 15 shots in 55:00 of action. Sophomore
Reed Karaska came on in relief to stop 3-of-4 on-target shots he faced the rest of the way.
Union finished the game with a 48-32 edge in shots and a 37-21 edge in ground balls. Senior
Patrick Regan led the team with nine ground balls as part of an excellent 14-of-17 mark from the faceoff X.
Union will play its first road game of the season on Saturday when the Dutchmen head to Babson College for a noon matchup with the Beavers.
