AUBURNDALE, FLA. – The Union College baseball started the 2020 season earning two wins against Purchase College in a doubleheader at the RussMatt Invitational on Thursday.
The Dutchmen started the day with a 5-2 win over the Panthers, before finishing off the day with a whopping 15-0 win.
Purchase scored the first runs of the day, scoring one run in both the first and second innings of game one. However, after conceding the two runs, Union would go on to shutout the Panthers for 12-straight innings.
Facing a 2-0 deficit in the first game, Union took a 4-2 lead off five hits and one error. Union then added a fifth run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a
Sean Cullen triple and a
Kevin Chaimowitz single.
Colin Nye picked up the win for the Dutchmen, while
Jason Goldblum recorded a save, throwing the final two innings. Nye recorded six strikeouts with just one earned run against, while Goldblum did not give up a hit to finish off the game.
In game two, the Dutchmen jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks to three hits and three errors. Union added two runs in the second and one run in both the third and sixth innings.
In the seventh inning, Union ended up scoring seven runs off three hits and one error. First years
Dan Choate and
Will Good both recorded multi-base hits in the inning.
Chris Murdock recorded the win for the Dutchmen, throwing a total of eight strikeouts with just three hits given up through four innings of work. Both
Zack Lerner and
Steve Acquario threw in relief before the end of the game.
Chris Symington finished the day leading the Dutchmen, hitting 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI's and one run scored.
Union returns to action back in Florida tomorrow with games against Castleton at 9 a.m. (ET) and Capital at 12:30 p.m.
