Union splits with Alma in high scoring games

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Union College baseball team split a doubleheader with Alma College, dropping the first game, 20-7, before winning the second, 14-12, on Saturday at the RussMatt Invitational.
 
Union jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning of the first game. Sean Cullen and Kevin Chaimowitz hit back-to-back home runs while Brandon Dupuis stole home before closing out the inning.
 
The Dutchmen scored twice more, as Cullen hit a second home run in the third inning and William Bellamy homered in the sixth. Unfortunately, the Scots went on to score 19 runs between the third and fifth innings, with a lone run in the seventh inning before completing the 20-7 win.
 
In the nightcap, Alma scored first, using a single to score a solo run in the second. In the third inning, both teams' bats got hot. The Dutchmen scored eight runs on four hits and two errors. The top of the inning was highlighted by as three-run bomb by Bellamy. The bottom of the third saw the Scots score seven runs on seven hits to tie the game up at 8-8.
 
The two teams traded runs in the sixth and seventh innings as the Scots forced extra innings after tying the game at 11-11 in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Union scored three runs in the eighth and kept Alma to just one run in the bottom of the inning to hold out for the 14-12 win.
 
The Dutchmen finish off out the RussMatt Invitational tomorrow with a doubleheader against Trine beginning at 11:30 a.m. (ET).
