Senior Spotlight: Mallory Toolan

With the spring sports season canceled at its very beginning (or before it even started, for some Union teams) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UnionAthletics.com will spend the next few months spotlighting many of the Union seniors whose athletic careers came to a premature end. Previous senior profiles can be viewed by heading to http://www.unionathletics.com/seniorspotlights.

Mallory Toolan is a four-year member of the Union College women's lacrosse team, starting 33 of her 34 appearances with the Dutchwomen. She ranked fifth on the team in scoring as a freshman with 12 goals and seven assists, then ranked in the top-five again last season with six goals and a team-leading 10 assists. The attacker averaged over a point per game for her career, putting home 19 goals with 18 assists for 37 points to go with 24 ground balls, 13 caused turnovers and 13 draw controls.

Off the field, the Classics and psychology double major is a Dean's List student and member of the Eta Sigma Phi Classical Studies Honors Society. She is a two-time Liberty League All-Academic Team selection and an IWLCA Academic Honor Roll pick as well.

What has been your favorite moment as a student-athlete at Union?
Although this is not one single moment, my favorite moments as a student-athlete were game days with my team. I will miss every second of the energy and positivity that circled through the locker room and each and every one of us. In those moments, it was when our team, my best friends were all together, just getting ready to go out on the field and play.

How has being a student-athlete at Union benefited you over the last four years?
Being a student-athlete at Union has made me form lasting relationships with not just other student-athletes on campus, but trainers, coaches, faculty, etc. I have met so many people throughout my four years at Union and each one of them has made a lasting impact on my experience as an athlete.

What has been your most meaningful experience outside of athletics?
My most meaningful experience outside of athletics was being able to make relationships and connections with the Classics Department. As one of my majors, I spent a lot of my free time with my professors and classmates in Classics and there is so much to thank them for. This group of people has impacted my college experience in so many positive ways.

Who was/is your favorite professor at Union and why?
I can't choose! It is between two professors.

What advice would you give to younger athletes about their time at Union?
My advice to younger student athletes is to not take any game, practice, workout, or anything for granted. People always told me that my college experience would be both the fastest and the best four years of my life and so far, they have been. So, live and play with no regrets because once it's over, all you can do is look back on the amazing memories you created with the amazing people you meet along the way.
