Senior Spotlight: Kate Spooner

Following the great success of our spring Senior Spotlights, UnionAthletics.com will spend the next few weeks spotlighting many of the Union seniors from all 26 Union varsity sports! Previous senior profiles can be viewed by heading to http://www.unionathletics.com/seniorspotlights.

Kate Spooner is a four-year member of the Union women's hockey team, appearing in 41 games in the crease during her career. She burst onto the scene as a freshman with one of the top seasons in school history, posting a .919 save percentage that ranks fourth all-time at Union to go with a 2.85 goals against average, and earned ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week honors in her second week of collegiate action. In four seasons, she finished with a .908 save percentage and 3.41 goals against average in nearly 2,000 minutes of action, ranking her sixth in program history in save percentage and GAA.

Off the ice, the sociology major is a three-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team honoree.

What has been your favorite moment as a student-athlete at Union?

My favorite moment as a student-athlete was winning the Mayor's Cup this year as a senior and sharing the experience with my teammates.

What has been your most meaningful experience outside of athletics?

The most meaningful experience outside of athletics was studying abroad in London. The ability to study abroad as a Division I athlete is a unique opportunity that Union offers as a result of the trimester system and I was fortunate to have that experience.

Who was/is your favorite professor at Union and why?

I was fortunate to have numerous outstanding professors at Union, however Professor Melinda Goldner [Professor of Sociology] went above and beyond for her students in a way that couldn't be matched. She loved seeing her students succeed and was always willing to lend a helping hand when necessary.

Do you have plans for post-graduation yet?  If so, what are they?

This September I will be attending St Andrews University in Scotland while pursuing my master's of science degree in sustainable development.
