TROY, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team dropped a tough 2-1 Liberty League matchup to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday evening at Harkness Field.
Senior
Emma Davis scored the lone goal of the game for Union in the fourth quarter as Union (5-7, 1-3 Liberty League) attempted to mount a comeback, but the visitors came up just short against an RPI (7-6, 3-1 Liberty League) team that started strong and held on at the end.
The Engineers tallied the lone goal of the opening quarter on Brianna Duba's fourth score of the year with 1:29 remaining, as the home team posted a 4-1 edge in shots. RPI fired eight more shots toward the Union goal in the second stanza, with Denana Bonci beating senior
Heather Poisson midway through to double the Engineer lead.
Poisson kept Union in the contest during the third quarter, as RPI outshot Union 5-0 but the senior netminder made three stops and also got a defensive save from junior
Isabel Lubin to keep the game within reach.
Davis finally got Union on the board with 1:36 left on the clock in the fourth quarter. The Dutchwomen pulled Poisson for an extra player off the ensuing restart, but the visitors could not muster a shot in looking to tie the score.
RPI finished the game with a 19-4 edge in shots, with Poisson recording eight saves to keep her team in the game.
Union will return to the field on Sunday, when the team welcomes #16 Vassar to Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium for a 1 p.m. match.
