SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College field hockey team ran into a very good Vassar College team on Sunday afternoon, as the 16th-ranked Brewers dealt the shorthanded Dutchwomen a 6-0 loss in Liberty League action at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Vassar (10-3, 3-2 Liberty League) did much of its damage in the first and fourth quarters, scoring twice in each frame and sending a combined 21 shots toward the Union net.
Vassar's Katie Hieb got the scoring started in the fourth minute, when she tapped in a pass from the far side of the field for her first goal of the season. That goal started an intense period of pressure by the Brewers, a two-minute stretch that included eight shots on goal and seven penalty corners. But the depleted Dutchwoman defense weathered the storm to keep it a one-goal game.
Vassar added one more goal later in the frame, as Hieb scored her second of the game and the year with under three minutes left. The Brewers outshot the Dutchwomen by a 12-5 margin over the first 15 minutes.
The Union defense stepped up considerably in the second and third quarters, limiting the Vassar attack to just three shots combined. However, goals by Carina D'Souza and Gianna Trunfio added to the lead.
The visitors added two more goals in the final quarter, as part of a 9-1 edge in shots.
Seniors Heather Poisson and Gabriella Stein split time in goal for Union, with Poisson making nine saves in the first half and Stein stopping seven in the second half.
Union (5-8, 1-4 Liberty League) will return to action on Wednesday, when the Dutchwomen travel to Morrisville State College for a 4 p.m. matchup.
