Union Plays to a 3-3 Draw

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - A back-and-forth affair between the Union College men's ice hockey team and Colorado College concluded in a stalemate, as the Dutchmen played to a 3-3 draw with the Tigers on Saturday evening at Messa Rink.

Four of the six goals scored tonight were scored on the powerplay. Union went 2-for-7 on the powerplay and Colorado College went 2-3 with the man advantage.

Senior Brandon Estes capped off a four-point weekend (1g, 3a) with two assists tonight and now leads the team in points.

Sophomore Liam Robertson opened the scoring for Union with a power-play goal at 17:04 of the first period. The Dutchmen capitalized on the man-advantage with a shot from first-year Michael Hodge to Estes. Robertson tipped the puck in at the crease for his second goal of the season to give Union the early 1-0 lead.

Colorado College answered 33 seconds into the second period, as Danny Weight recovered the puck off a wraparound attempt and Patrick Cozzi found the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1.

The Tigers took their first lead of the game with a power-play goal by Jordan Biro at the 2:45 mark. Logan Will attempted to beat Murphy stick-side. Murphy made the save on the initial shot, but Biro received the puck off the bounce in the crease and wristed it in for the goal to give the Tigers their first lead of the game, 2-1.

Union struck back with another power-play goal, this time from junior Chaz Smedsrud, at 7:03 of the second frame. Junior Matt Allen passed the puck up the boards where Estes was waiting just before the blue line. Estes fired a shot and Smedsrud redirected it from the right-wing circle into the net, knotting the game up 2-2.

The Dutchmen reclaimed the lead with a goal from senior captain Josh Kosack, his first of the season, at 14:22 of the second period. Kosack banked the puck off the boards to sophomore Ville Immonen. Immonen passed the puck back to Kosack who was waiting in the slot to fire it home, giving Union the lead, 3-2.

Colorado College closed out an eventful second period with their second power-play goal at the 15:57 mark, leveling the game at 3-3.

The game remained a 3-3 stalemate after a quiet third period, paving the way for Union to participate in their first-ever 3-on-3 overtime period in program history. First-year Collin Graf had a last-second opportunity in the low slot, but the shot went wide left of the net as time expired.

Union goalie Connor Murphy recorded his fourth game of 30+ saves, finishing the evening with 35 saves, 17 of which came in the first period.

The Dutchmen return to action on Friday, October 22, as they travel to Sault Ste. Marie, MI to take on Lake Superior State. Puck drop from Taffy Abel Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
