Dawson's Late Goal Propels Field Hockey Past William Smith

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Emily Dawson scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 3:23 remaining in the fourth quarter, as the Union College field hockey team picked up a big 3-2 victory over William Smith College in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Dawson had another strong effort for Union (4-5, 1-1 Liberty League), recording her second multi-goal game of the year. Classmate Isabel Lubin also scored for the Dutchwomen, who built up an early lead and then withstood a strong Heron comeback in the second half to pull out the key conference win.

William Smith (3-6, 0-2 Liberty League) had the better of play for much of the opening quarter, holding a 6-3 edge in shots and forcing senior goalie Heather Poisson to make four saves. But Union weathered the early storm and converted on one of its few chances, when Dawson scored from the middle of the arc with 3:35 left on the clock in the first.

The second stanza followed a similar script, as Poisson stood tall in goal and Union added another goal to its ledger. An early offensive blitz by the Dutchwomen eventually resulted in a penalty stroke called for the home team, and Lubin stepped up and slid the ball into the near corner for her third goal of the season just 1:53 into the period. After four more saves by Poisson, Union took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

William Smith would not go quietly, however, as Sofia Pattillo scored midway through the third quarter and then again early in the fourth to even the score. But with less than four minutes remaning, first-year Jaden Greenwald fed a ball into the middle of the arc for Dawson, who turned and beat Stephanie Stone for the game-winner. The assist was Greenwald's first collegiate point.

The Herons finished with a 14-10 edge in shots, but Poisson once again kept her team in the game by turning aside 10-of-12 on-target attempts. The win is Union's second in a row over William Smith, matching the program's win total from the previous 38 years against the Herons (2-29-1).

Union will look to keep its winning ways going on Wednesday with a non-conference matchup against Elms College set for 6 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
