SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Four different players found the net and seven different players had at least one point as the Union College field hockey team earned its third straight victory with a commanding 4-0 win over Elms College in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Junior
Caroline Werner led all players with two points for Union (5-5), scoring once and adding an assist. Senior
Sydney Walters, junior
Emily Dawson and sophomore
Sophie Ruhl also scored the Dutchwomen in the victory.
Union outshot Elms 6-0 in the first quarter of play, keeping the ball mostly in the offensive half of the field. Walters opened the scoring 9:22 into the contest with her first goal of the season, when she took a feed from junior
Jill Bove off a corner insert and slipped the ball through a crowd.
The lead doubled in the second quarter thanks to Werner's first goal of the season 8:02 before halftime. Off another Union corner, a shot by sophomore
Grace Krebs was deftly deflected into the top corner by Werner to put the Dutchwomen up 2-0.
The home team put the game away with two more goals in the third quarter. Dawson tapped in a pass across the goal mouth by senior
Katherine Sadak 2:20 into the period, followed later in the frame by a Ruhl shot that found the back of the net in the 43rd minute.
Union finished the evening with a 20-3 edge in shots. Senior
Gabriella Stein earned her second start of the year in goal and responded with her second shutout, turning aside all three shots she faced to pick up the victory.
The Dutchwomen will return to Liberty League play on Saturday with a matchup at the University of Rochester beginning at 4 p.m.
