ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The final score read 4-1 as the Union College women's hockey team swept the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers in the weekend series at Gene Polisseni Center. The Dutchwomen have started the season off with two wins.
Union had four different goal scorers today. Junior
Emily King led the way with a goal and assist. First-years
Maren Friday and
Paige Greco each added a goal, while Friday also chipped in with an assist. Senior
Grace Heiting capped off the scoring with an empty-net goal to seal the win. Sophomore
Celeste Beaudoin added two assists as well for Union.
King got the scoring started for the Dutchwomen in the first period on the power-play, with both Friday and Beaudoin credited with assists. Union outshot RIT 18-11 in the first period.
In the second period, Friday blasted a shot by the goaltender on the power-play to make it 2-0 Union. King and Beaudoin gathered assists on the slap shot. Union controlled much of play for the period and entered the third up 2-0.
In the third period, Greco jumped into the scoring by potting her second goal of the year, when she jammed home a loose puck in the crease. Junior
Carmen Merlo earned an assist as well as first-year
Maddie Suitor. RIT's Emma Roland stopped sophomore
Olivia Rinzel's shutout bid,with a wrist shot that beat the goaltender high to the glove side, but that was all the Tigers would get. Heiting added an empty-net goal in the waning seconds when she jumped on a loose puck at center ice and scored from the logo. Senior captain
Cassidy Michalicka forced the loose puck with a great forecheck to earn the assist.
Union went 2-for-4 on the power-play, while also stopping both of RIT's power-play opportunities. Rinzel made 16 saves in the win as Union out-shot RIT 34-17.
Union (2-0-0) will travel home for their home and ECAC Hockey opener when the Dutchwomen face off against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday, October 8 at 6 p.m. at Messa Rink at Achilles Center.
