Field Hockey Can't Keep Pace with Thoroughbreds

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Skidmore College scored once in each of the first three quarters as the Thoroughbreds defeated the Union College field hockey team by a 3-0 score in Liberty League action on Friday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Carrie Hughes had two goals to lead Skidmore (8-9, 2-4 Liberty League), who posted a 21-4 edge in shots. Seniors Heather Poisson and Gabriella Stein combined to make 11 saves to keep Union (6-9, 1-5 Liberty League) in the contest, as the Dutchwoman defense was put to the test all day long.

After an uneventful start to the contest, Hughes put Skidmore ahead in the 10th minute when she tipped home a long pass forward by Lauren Ruggiero. The visitors added another in the second stanza, getting a goal by Carolyn Blackman to put Skidmore up by two at the half. The Thoroughbreds had a 10-1 edge in shots over the first 30 minutes.

Skidmore added one more early in the third quarter, chasing Poisson from the contest after making seven saves in 31:12 of action. Stein came on in relief and made four saves the rest of the way, but the Dutchwomen were unable to muster much on the other side of the field.

Union will close out conference play on Sunday at St. Lawrence University beginning at 2 p.m.
