CANTON, N.Y. – A four-goal second quarter was the difference on Sunday afternoon as the Union College field hockey team fell to St. Lawrence University by a 6-2 score in a Liberty League matchup at North Country Field.
Junior
Emily Dawson netted her 12th goal of the season to lead Union (5-10, 1-6 Liberty League), in the process moving into a tie for 10th on the school single-season goals list. Senior
Emma Davis also scored her fifth goal of the year for the Dutchwomen, ranking her second on the team this season.
Mckenzie Haberl had an impressive game for St. Lawrence, playing a part in all six Saints goals with four tallies and two assists.
Haberl scored the only goal of the first quarter with 5:32 remaining, as the teams combined for just three shots in the opening 15 minutes. Davis evened the score 5:15 into the second stanza off an assist by first-year
Grace Goddard, but St. Lawrence had a quick and decisive answer, scoring four times in 7:03 to take a 5-1 lead into halftime.
Dawson got one goal back with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Haberl responded less than two minutes later to account for the final score.
St. Lawrence finished with an 18-10 edge in shots. Senior
Gabriella Stein made a career-high 11 saves in goal for Union.
Union will close out the 2021 season at home on Saturday, when the Dutchwomen welcome Stevens Institute of Technology to Schenectady for a Homecoming and Family Weekend matchup beginning at 6 p.m.
