SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's hockey team battled to a 2-1 loss against #9 Providence College Friday, evening at Messa Rink.
First-year
Maren Friday got the Dutchwomen started in the first period. Providence committed a tripping penalty at the 13:59 mark of the first period. Union wasted no time scoring on the advantage. Friday walked right into the slot and blasted a slap shot into the top right corner to give Union the early lead. Sophomore
Celeste Beaudoin and junior
Emily King were credited with the assists. Union was out shot 14-7 in the first.
In the second period, neither team found the back of the net in part to both goalies making great save after great save. Union had two power-play opportunities but could not convert.
In the third period Providence scored immediately on the power-play. This tying goal came at the 3:38 mark of the period. Providence would then score again with under five minutes in the game to give themselves the lead. This goal also ended up being the game winner.
Union was out shot 37-17 for the game. Providence went 1-3 on the man advantage and Union was 1-4. Sophomore
Olivia Rinzel stopped 35 pucks in the effort.
Union (2-5-1,0-2-0) will play host to the Terriers of Boston University for a 3 p.m. game at Messa Rink Saturday, October 22, 2021.
