Union Comes From Behind to Beat Clarkson, 2-1

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's soccer team hosted Clarkson, Saturday afternoon on College Park Field. Union came from behind to beat Clarkson 2-1.

The win is a huge one for Union (6-7-2, 3-3-1 Liberty League) in the race for the postseason, as the victory moves the Dutchwomen into a four-way tie for fourth place in the Liberty League alongside Vassar, Skidmore and St. Lawrence with two matches left.

First-year Sam Friedman led the charge for the Dutchwomen with a goal and an assist, while sophomore Liz DiCecco scored the game-winning goal for Union in the win.

Clarkson got the scoring started in the 17th minute when Julia Cascone took a shot that beat junior netminder Abby Mitty. Union would answer back less than 13 minutes later in the 30th minute when Friedman dribbled to the top of the box and floated a shot that went over the outstretched hand of the Clarkson goalie. Despite being outshot in the half, 5-4, Union went into halftime knotted at one.

In the second half, both teams traded chances and Union finally broke through to take its first lead of the game. Friedman dribbled by several Clarkson defenders and, as she was being taken down, she passed the ball to DiCecco, who then potted the pass into the open goal to give Union its first lead of the game in the 75th minute. Clarkson increased the pressure for the remainder of the game, but the Golden Knights were unable to score to even things up.

Mitty finished the match with four saves, as Union was outshot by a 12-8 margin.

The Dutchwomen face off against Skidmore College in a very important Liberty League matchup on Wednesday in Saratoga Springs. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
