SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Sophomore
Meghan Piser scored twice for the Union College women's soccer team on Wednesday evening as the Dutchwomen clinched a spot in the Liberty League Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Skidmore College.
The victory assures Union (7-7-2, 4-3-1 Liberty League) of a postseason berth for the second season in a row. The team could still finish anywhere from third to sixth place depending on Saturday's results, but a win on Saturday in the regular-season finale against Rochester Institute of Technology would assure the Dutchwomen a home game in the first round of the postseason.
Union broke the ice in the 40th minute when Piser scored off a free kick from senior
Hanna Raymond. The ball bounced passed the defense and Piser finished off the cross for her first collegiate goal. Skidmore outshot Union 8-5 in the half, but junior netminder
Abby Mitty made five saves in the first half to keep Skidmore off the score sheet.
In the second half, Piser provided some insurance by netting her second goal of the evening when she knocked in a rebound off a shot from senior
Fiona Zimmerman. This goal came in the 73rd minute of the game and extended Union's lead to 2-0. Mitty made seven saves on the night and posted a shutout for the Dutchwomen.
Union has one more game left in the regular season when the Dutchwomen host RIT for Senior Day during Homecoming and Family Weekend at College Park Field at 2 p.m. on Saturday,
