SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's soccer team had a lot to celebrate Saturday afternoon, as the Dutchwomen honored their senior class before the game and then clinched the third seed in the Liberty League Tournament with a 1-0 win over Rochester Institute of Technology at College Park Field.
Senior
Erin O'Shea scored the lone goal in the match for Union (8-7-2, 5-3-1 Liberty League), which leaped over RIT into the third spot of the conference standings. As a result, the Dutchwomen will host Vassar College in the first round of the postseason on Tuesday at 7 p.m.b
In the first half, neither team really found their game. First-year
Sam Friedman was able to get behind the Tiger defense with about 10 minutes to play in the first half and took a shot that was labeled for the top corner, but netminder Darcie Jones made a great save on the breakaway. Union was outshot 8-4 in the half and neither team found the back of the net.
In the second half, the intensity picked up on both sides and the teams began to trade chances. Union capitalized on an opportunity in the 56th minute when O'Shea took a shot that deflected off an RIT defender and trickled inside the far post. This was O'Shea's fifth goal of the year and gave Union a 1-0 lead.
Following the goal, RIT picked up the pressure and maintained possession for much of the final 34 minutes of play. The Tigers found themselves with multiple chances but junior goalie
Abby Mitty made four saves in the second half and six on the day, including one that was headed for the far post and she was able to dive over and make the save to keep Union ahead . This was Mitty's second shutout in a row and third of the season. Union was out shot 17-7 in the game.
