Schleimer’s OT Heroics Propels Dutchwomen to Semifinal

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior Emma Schleimer scored in the 96th minute to propel the Union College women's soccer team over Vassar College, 1-0, Tuesday evening at College Park Field. The win sends Union to the Liberty League Semifinals to play Ithaca College.

In the first half Union had the best chance to break through. Just over 10 minutes into the first half, sophomore Amanda Sgueglia sent a cross into the box that found Senior Bella Dworkin's head. The redirection from Dworkin beat the goalie but found the post and stayed out. First-year Sam Friedman had a great follow-up chance that she lifted just over the cross-bar. Neither team found the back of the net in the first half. Union out shot Vassar 7-2 in the half.

The second half was a defensive battle. Neither Vassar or Union wanted to give up the first goal. Shots were 3-3 for the half and there were not many chances on either side. This game would remain scoreless and head to overtime.

Union who has been very familiar with overtime this season, this was their seventh game that had gone to overtime this season. Union took over as soon as the whistle blew. Six minutes in Schleimer intercepted the failed clear from the Brewer defender and took a shot from 25 yards out. Her shot drifted towards the far post and fell inside the post for the lone tally in the game and also the game winner. Union won 1-0 over Vassar in the Liberty League Quarterfinal.

Junior keeper Abby Mitty secured her third straight shutout in the win, stopping all three shots she faced.

Union will travel to Geneva, N.Y. to play Ithaca College in the Liberty League Semifinal game on Saturday, November 6th. Kick off is at 1:30 p.m.
