ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior
Emily Dawson scored twice in the second half as the Union College field hockey team rallied to force overtime, but the Dutchwomen's excellent effort came up just short in a 4-3 (OT) loss to the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon at Fauver Stadium.
Union (5-6,1-2 Liberty League) certainly put a scare into Rochester (9-3, 2-1 Liberty League) on the Yellow Jackets' home turf, scoring the most goals against UR in over a decade. Dawson tallied twice and junior
Caroline Werner also scored for the visitors.
Rochester looked to be in control early on, getting a pair of goals in the first 6:37 of the period to take an early lead. But Union settled in after that, with Werner getting one of the goals back less than three minutes later to make the score 2-1 at the 8:57 mark. Senior
Heather Poisson made one save in the first period and three more in the second after the early surge to keep the Dutchwomen within one at halftime.
The Yellow Jackets regained their two-goal lead 2:23 into the third quarter, but Dawson again made it a one-goal game in the 41st minute when she tapped in a cross by first-year
Grace Goddard. Then, less than five minutes into the fourth quarter, Dawson netted her 10th goal of the year by tipping home a cross by sophomore
Sophie Ruhl to knot the score.
A defensive save by junior
Isabel Lubin helped send the game into overtime, where play opened up considerably with the open field. Rochester took the only seven shots of the extra frame, the last of which was put home by Amanda Strenk in the 70th minute to give Rochester the win.
Poisson finished with eight saves while Lubin had a pair of defensive saves for the visitors, as Union was outshot 28-13 but hung with the Yellow Jackets throughout.
Union will continue Liberty League play on Friday at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at 4 p.m.
