ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College women's volleyball team returned from an extended break on Friday night and ran into a strong Rochester Institute of Technology attack, as the Tigers put down 43 kills in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-13) win over the Dutchwomen in Liberty League action at Clark Memorial Gymnasium.
Playing for the first time since September 25, Union (4-11, 0-3 Liberty League) struggled to get an attack going against RIT (15-2, 3-0 Liberty League), putting down only 15 kills in the three sets. Junior
Julia Webster and sophomores
Keara Page and
Morgan Bohlke led the team with four kills each, while Taylor Higgins and Katie Hobler led the Tigers with 13 kills apiece.
The Dutchwomen hung with RIT during the opening set, remaining in striking distance early on and then using a run to nearly take the early lead. A 5-0 run gave Union a 16-14 lead behind a pair of aces from senior
Jessica Siragusa, and the visitors added on another 5-0 run soon after, helped by two aces from sophomore
Sophia Estok, to built up a 21-16 advantage. However, Union could not hold on, as RIT finished the frame with a 9-2 run to take the first set.
Seizing on the momentum from their comeback, RIT came out hot in the second stanza, hitting .536 with 17 kills and two errors to open up a two-set lead. The team cooled down a little bit in the third set, but still put down 12 kills to finish off the sweep.
Union will continue Liberty League play tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Ithaca College.
