DURHAM, N.H. – The Union College men's hockey team dropped a heartbreaker to the University of New Hampshire, 3-2, Saturday night at the Whittemore Center.
In the loss, Union falls to 3-7 all-time against the Wildcats.
Union opened the scoring in a similar fashion to Friday night's game. Sophomore
Tyler Watkins tipped a potential outlet pass to first-year
Michael Hodge. Hodge then redirected the puck through traffic to sophomore
Liam Robertson on the doorstep, and he beat UNH goalie Mike Robinson short side 2:01 into the first period.
The Wildcats scored the equalizer on the power play with 1.4 seconds to go in the second quarter, as the home team won a faceoff cleanly for a one-timer in the waning seconds.
Knotted at one apiece going into the third period, junior assistant captain
Dylan Anhorn went coast-to-coast to give Union a 2-1 lead at 3:09 of the third period. But the Wildcats found the back of the net 8:40 later, tying the game at two.
In what seemed like a game headed to overtime, UNH found the back of the net with 56 seconds remaining in the third period to take the victory.
Junior
Connor Murphy had 30 saves in the loss and 67 total on the weekend.
The Dutchmen turn their attention to their home opener on Friday, October 16 against Colorado College. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
