Men's Hockey Blanks Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Behind a 34 save shutout performance by junior Connor Murphy, the Union College men's hockey team blanked the Colgate University Raiders 2-0 Saturday evening at Class of 1965 Arena.

The victory marks Union's first road victory of the season and the first ECAC Hockey win in regulation. The Dutchmen are now 3-7-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play.

Six different Dutchmen filled the score sheet. First-year Michael Hodge and junior Christian Sanda scored goals for the Dutchmen while Gabriel Seger, Josh Kosack, Cullen Ferguson, and Ville Immonen recorded assists.

After a scoreless first period, Union found the back of the net on the powerplay to take a 1-0 lead at 4:25 of the second frame. Kosack gained possession of the puck in the neutral zone, sending a cross ice pass from center ice to Seger at the blue line. The junior dished the puck to a wide-open Hodge in the slot, who backhanded the puck top shelf into the net.

The Dutchmen weren't finished as they found the back of the net again in the third period. Ferguson sent a wrister from the left-wing circle, but Carter Gylander made a kick save. The puck rebounded into the right-wing circle, where Sanda was waiting to tap it home into the open net.

The Dutchmen went 1-for-3 on the powerplay and were perfect for the second night in a row on the penalty kill, denying Colgate on all four chances.

Murphy's 34 saves marked the fifth time this season the netminder stopped 30 or more shots this season. In the win, Murphy improves to 3-6-1 on the season. Gylander made 23 saves in the loss and moves to 5-4-0.

Union will enjoy a week off due to final exams before returning to action on Saturday, November 27 for a non-conference game with Merrimack College. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Lawler Rink.
