Bobcats Late Goal Stuns Union, 2-1

HAMDEN, C.T. – The Union College women's hockey team put a huge scare into #8 Quinnipiac University, but the Bobcats scored in the final 90 seconds to escape with a 2-1 win Friday evening at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena. First-year Ashley Adams scored her first collegiate goal in the game.

Both teams traded chances looking to find the back of the net, in the first. Union had a shorthanded chance come on the stick of senior Grace Heiting, but her shot was blocked on the partial breakaway. Sophomore net minder Olivia Rinzel was busy in the first period. She made 12 saves and kept the score 0-0 though one period.

In the second period, Adams lit the lamp for the Dutchwomen. Adams picked a defender's pocket and beat the Bobcat goalie on their blocker side.  This was her first collegiate goal and gave Union a 1-0 lead just 2:20 into the second period. The goal was unassisted. With 2:13 left in the period Quinnipiac tied it up with a deflected shot that found the back of the net.

The Dutchwomen and the Bobcats each had chances in the third period looking for that next goal. Quinnipiac found the next goal when they scored with 1:24 left in the third period to take the lead 2-1 on a 4-on-4. Rinzel made 36 stops in the effort.

The Dutchwomen (2-9-1, 0-5-0) will hit the road for a Saturday, November 6th, afternoon matchup against the Princeton University Tigers at Hobey Baker Rink. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m.
