ORONO, MAINE – Behind 51 saves from junior
Connor Murphy, the Union College men's hockey team tied the University of Maine 1-1 on Friday night at Alfond Arena.
Murphy's career-high 51 saves is the ninth highest single-game save total in Union's Division I era. The last time a goaltender made more than 50 saves was when Alex Sakellaropoulos made 52 stops at Quinnipiac on December 3, 2016.
Maine jumped out to a lead in the first period off the stick of Adrien Bisson.
After a scoreless second period, the Dutchmen tied the game at 4:41 of the third frame. Sophomore
Tyler Watkins sent a cross-ice pass from the top of the circle to senior
Ryan Sidorski., who fired a shot from the center of the offensive zone. The puck rebounded off of Matthew Thiessen's pad and landed right on first-year
Collin Graf's stick, who tapped it home.
Aside from scoring the game-tying goal, Graf led the team with four shots on goal and went 10-for-16 in the faceoff circle.
The Dutchmen went 0-for-2 on the powerplay and prevented Maine from capitalizing on their lone power-play chance.
Union will close out the series with Maine tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. at Alfond Arena.
