ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team moved to 2-1 in Liberty League play with a 6-3 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology in a conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Austin Egna led the way for Union (2-1, 2-1 Liberty League) with a pair of victories, teaming with his brother
Max Egna for an 8-4 win at third doubles before earning a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set win over Ethan Martin at third singles. The Egnas' win was the only victory of the three doubles contests for Union, which needed strong singles play to earn the win – and got it.
The Dutchmen won five of six singles matches to pick up the victory, beginning with sophomore
Aidan O'Brien's 6-4, 6-3 win over Verosh Jayanetti at second singles that evened the match at two. Egna put Union ahead with his third-singles win, only to have RIT's Brennan Bull even the score at three with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over junior
Ioannis Binopoulos at the first flight.
But it was all Union after that, as the Dutchmen took the final three flights to secure the victory. Sophomore
Thomas McGuire earned Union's fourth point with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Jake Wolicki at fourth singles, followed soon after by first-year
Bailey McAtee's clinching 6-4, 6-3 fifth-singles win. Junior
Cameron Klepper finished off the day with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at sixth singles.
Union is slated to take on Skidmore College in a home-and-home series next weekend, beginning on Saturday in Saratoga Springs.
