ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team rolled to its second straight Liberty League victory on Saturday afternoon, sweeping all six singles matches on the way to a 7-2 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology at the RIT Tennis Courts.
Senior
Megan Brown and sophomore
Marilena Karadimou combined for three of Union's seven wins on the day. The tandem earned Union's first point with an 8-5 victory at first doubles, while Brown followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles and Karadimou added a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at the second flight.
Trailing 2-1 after doubles play, Union (2-0, 2-0 Liberty League) took full control in singles competition, winning four matches in straight sets and two more in supertiebreakers to clinch the win. First-year
Gracie Nicol knotted the match at two with a 6-2, 6-3 win at fourth singles, followed by Brown's win over Claire Casalnova that put Union ahead for good.
Sophomore
Sophie Brown's 6-3, 6-1 third-singles victory over Kirsten Auble and Karadimou's second-singles win clinched the victory for Union. Junior
Dana D'Onofrio and senior
Cathy Xing added to Union's margin of victory, as D'Onofrio outlasted Jackie Drozd in a fifth-singles supertiebreaker, 7-6 (7-1), 2-5, (10-8), while Xing defeated Julia Smolowitz at sixth singles, 6-2, 4-6, (10-6).
Union is slated to take on Skidmore College in a home-and-home series next weekend, beginning on Friday evening in Schenectady starting at 4:30 p.m.
