SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College softball team faced off against Ithaca College for the second straight day on Sunday afternoon, dropping both ends of the Liberty League doubleheader by the scores of 4-0 and 9-0 (5 inn.) at Alexander Field.
Â
Game 1: Ithaca 4, Union 0
Â
Ithaca took an early lead in the first game with two runs in the second inning, and an additional two later in the game would help further that advantage. While Union had some good plays defensively and some hard hit balls, the Dutchwomen were unable to score any runs in the 4-0 defeat.
Â
After neither team scored in the first inning, Ithaca was able to grab two runs at the top of the second due to an RBI double from Gabby Laccona that plated Kailey Collins and Daniella Mulvey. The two-run margin stood until the fifth, when Mulvey came home on a base hit by Collins. Ithaca would score its final run of the game in the sixth inning, when Laccona tripled and came home on an RBI groundout off the bat of Allison Dell'Orto.
Â
Union was unable to do anything offensively against Ithaca pitcher Beth Fleming (4-1), who only allowed two hits in seven innings. Senior
Makayla Koehler (0-4) took the loss for the Dutchwomen, as she allowed four runs (three earned) on 10 hits in 5.1 innings.
Â
Game 2: Ithaca 9, Union 0
Â
Ithaca came out again with the early lead in game two with five runs in the first two innings, and an additional four runs in the fourth inning gave the Bombers the 9-0 victory in five innings.
Â
The first inning started off strong for Ithaca with an sacrifice fly from Julia Loffredo that scored Dell'Orto. Four more runs crossed the plate in the second, with the big blow a bases-clearing triple by Dell'Orto.
Â
After a scoreless third inning from both teams, Ithaca came back to score another four runs in the fourth, with Tava Kasper, Dell'Orto, Loffredo, and Collins all driving in one run apiece.
Â
Union was again unable to do anything offensively, as Ithaca pitcher Riley Piromalli (4-1) only allowed one hit the entire game, a double by sophomore
Olivia Valery to lead off the second inning. Sophomore
Amanda Granato (1-3) took the loss for Union, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits in 3.2 innings.
Â
Union will continue Liberty League play next weekend with a four-game series against Rochester Institute of Technology, starting with two games on Saturday at Alexander Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
