Softball Splits Two Games at RIT

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College softball team headed to Rochester on Sunday, splitting two games against the Rochester Institute of Technology. The Dutchwomen dominated the first game with a 9-3 win, but unfortunately fell 10-4 in the second game.

Game 1: Union 9, RIT 3

Union overcame a slow start in game one , scoring nine of the game's final 10 runs to earn the victory. Sophomore Anna Zdunczyk led the way offensively for Union in game one, going 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Classmate Tara Hartnett and junior Julia Boule both went 2-for-3 with two RBIs apiece, while sophomore Karson Saunders also drove in a pair.

After a quick first inning the Dutchwomen found themselves trailing by two runs. But the team was able to turn the game around in the second inning when Zdunczyk and Hartnett chipped in RBI singles to tie the game back up. Then in the fourth inning, Saunders put the Dutchwomen ahead 4-2 with a triple to send Hartnett and Zdunczyk home.

Union added some insurance runs in the final frames, as Zdunczyk and Hartnett drove in one run apiece in the sixth inning and Boule added a two-run double in the seventh before scoring on a wild pitch.

Senior Makayla Koehler (1-4) overcame a tough start to pick up the win for Union, allowing just the two runs on six hits over five innings before classmate Catie Raeter came on for the final two frames.

Game 2: RIT 10, Union 4

Union again overcame a slow start in game two, but RIT scored the final six runs of the game to earn the Sunday split.

The Dutchwomen fell into an early hole thanks to three unearned runs in the bottom of the first, but the second inning showed to be more successful. After loading the bases with no outs, sophomore Amanda Granato drove home one run with an infield grounder and Saunders did as well before a sacrifice fly by senior Stuart Buxton tied the score.

With the game tied at four, RIT retook the lead with one run in the fourth inning and then broke the game open with four more in the fifth frame, with the big blow a bases-clearing double by Natalie Barrera.

Granato (1-5) suffered the loss for Union, allowing five runs (two earned) on 11 hits in 4.2 innings.

Union is slated to return to action next Saturday with two games at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
