SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Junior
Peter Burnes led all players with a career-high six points on four goals and two assists as the #9 Union College men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten with a 19-5 victory over Vassar College on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Burnes led the Dutchmen with a career-best four goals and also added five ground balls and two caused turnovers in the win, while junior
Brian Davis led all players with four assists. Junior
Jack Donahue (three goals) and senior
Hayden Frey (two goals, one assist) also had strong efforts for Union (3-0, 2-0 Liberty League).
Vassar (0-3, 0-3 Liberty League) was led by Maximus Albanese who had two goals, and Troy Santise who had two assists.
Union asserted itself quickly in the first quarter, with a total of five goals before Vassar was able to score its first. Donahue and Burnes scored twice each during the early 5-0 run, with Davis assisting on three of the tallies as well. Senior
Chris Kelly answered Vassar's first goal with his first collegiate tally a mere 11 seconds later, while a final goal from senior
Hayden Frey in the last four seconds gave the Dutchmen a 7-2 lead going into the second frame.
The Brewers started the second quarter off by scoring two goals in the first seven minutes. But Union responded with four straight goals from junior
Keaton McCann, Burnes (two) and Donahue in the last six minutes to take an 11-4 lead into the second half.
Union kept the pressure on in the third frame, with goals by Frey and junior
Owen Toland 27 seconds apart making it a 13-4 game. After that the benches began to empty for the Dutchmen and five players scored their first collegiate goals for the home team. First-year
Jake Mabardy started the run with his first of two on the day with 6:39 left in the third, followed by a tally from classmate
Liam McGovern and another Mabardy tally that put Union up 16-5 headed into the fourth.
Sophomore
Cole Hartman and first-years
Nate Sidel and
Clayton Arcuri got into the action in the fourth quarter with their first collegiate goals, as Union outscored Vassar 3-0 to complete the victory.
The Dutchmen controlled play almost entirely from the outset, outshooting Vassar 46-12, as first-year
Dan Donahue and junior
Reed Karaska combined to make three saves. Junior
Sam Byrne also had another good day at the X, winning 18-of-23 faceoffs and grabbing a game-high 14 ground balls.
Union is slated to continue Liberty League play on Wednesday with a makeup game at Ithaca College beginning at 4 p.m.
