Xing Wins Twice for Women's Tennis on Senior Day

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team fell to Vassar College by a 6-3 score in Liberty League action on Saturday at the Union Tennis Courts.

Playing in the final home match of the year, senior Cathy Xing was a bright spot for Union (2-2, 2-2 Liberty League) on the day, earning a pair of wins at sixth singles and third doubles. Junior Dana D'Onofrio also earned a win at fifth singles for the Dutchwomen.

Union put up strong efforts in the three doubles contests, but were only able to come away with one victory. That came at the third flight, as Xing and first-year Gracie Nicol made quick work of Sara Ehnstrom and Nicole Pihlstrom in an 8-1 victory.

D'Onofrio temporarily knotted the match at two with a 6-2, 6-2 win at fifth singles over Ehnstrom, but Vassar regained the lead for good with wins at second and third singles. Xing kept the Dutchwomen alive with a 6-3, 6-3 sixth-singles victory over Pihlstrom, before the Brewers took fourth and first singles to round out the victory.

Saturday's match was the final home contest for Union's three seniors: Xing, Megan Brown, and Samantha Siegel.

Originally rescheduled for tomorrow, Union and Vassar will take to the court again on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m. in Poughkeepsie.
