SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the 2021 spring season with a hard-fought 6-3 win over St. Lawrence University in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at the Union Tennis Courts.
Eight different Dutchmen had a hand in Saturday's win, with two doubles victories and four singles wins providing the final margin for Union (1-1, 1-1 Liberty League).
After the Saints earned the first point of doubles play, senior
Max Egna and junior
Cameron Klepper squared the match with an 8-5 victory over Quinn Bermingham and Adam Heilbronner at second doubles. Senior
David Bond and junior
Nick Weitzman then gave Union some momentum heading into singles play with an 8-5 victory of their own at third doubles over Cole Hamilton and Benjamin Moolman.
The Dutchmen responded by winning three of the first four singles contests to clinch the match. Senior
Austin Egna rebounded from a tough first set to take out Hamilton at fourth singles, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, before junior
Ioannis Binopoulos put Union on the edge of victory by defeating Leo Romanetz, 6-4, 6-2, at the top flight.
After sophomore
Aidan O'Brien lost a hard-fought three-setter (6-1, 1-6, 6-2) at second singles, sophomore
Thomas McGuire earned the decisive fifth point with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory at fourth singles over Bermingham. Freshman
Bailey McAtee punctuated the day with a well-earned sixth-singles win, outlasting Jordan Mamelak in a supertiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, (10-6).
Union will continue Liberty League play next Saturday at Rochester Institute of Technology beginning at 1 p.m.
