SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team came up short in its home and conference finale on Saturday afternoon, falling to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by a 6-3 score in Liberty League action at the Union Tennis Courts.
Union (2-4, 2-4 Liberty League) started the day well against Rensselaer (3-0, 3-0 Liberty League), taking two of the three doubles matches to grab an early lead. After RPI emerged victorious at first doubles, senior
David Bond and junior
Jack Andre evened the match with an 8-5 win at third doubles. The second-doubles tandem of junior
Ioannis Binopoulos and first-year
Bailey McAtee then put the Dutchmen ahead with an 8-5 win of their own.
The momentum could not carry over to singles, however, as the Engineers won at the first four flights to clinch the win. Three of the four matches finished 7-5 in the first set, as Binopoulos, McAtee and senior
Austin Egna all came close to changing the course of the match before bowing out in straight sets.
Senior
Max Egna picked up one singles victory for the home team, posting a 6-2, 6-4 win over Phoenix Tamoaki at the sixth flight.
The Dutchmen and Engineers will meet tomorrow in a non-conference contest in Troy, as Union looks to wrap up the 2020-21 season with a win.
