CASTLETON, Vt. – Junior
Isabel Lubin recorded a career-high five points on two goals and an assist to lead four Dutchwomen scoring their first collegiate goals as the Union College field hockey team started the 2021 season with an impressive 5-0 victory over Castleton University on Wednesday night at Dave Wolk Stadium.
Lubin led the parade of Union (1-0) players scoring their first career goals in the victory, as she was joined in the scoring column for the first time by junior
Jill Bove as well as sophomores
Grace Krebs and
Sophie Ruhl, both of whom were making their long-awaited collegiate debuts. Seniors
Cristina Boudreau and
Katherine Sadak both picked up assists as well for Union while classmate
Heather Poisson earned the shutout at the other end, needing to making only two saves to pick up her fifth career shutout.
Playing their first collegiate contest in 672 days, the visitors dominated in all aspects of the game in Wednesday's opener. Union out-shot Castleton by a 23-3 margin, including a 12-2 edge in on-target attempts, and took 10 penalty corners to the Spartans' three.
Lubin got the scoring started in the ninth minute of play following a shot by senior
Emma Davis that rang off the post and eventually resulted in a penalty stroke. The junior stepped to the mark and deposited the ball into the lower-right corner for the goal. Union ended the first quarter with an 8-0 edge in shots in addition to the 1-0 lead.
Krebs scored the lone goal of the second stanza, taking a pass from Boudreau in transition and beating Castleton keeper Hannah Frittenburg for her first career tally, giving Union a 2-0 lead headed into halftime.
Union then put the game away with a blitz of three goals in 4:05 spaning the third-quarter break. Lubin notched her second of the game at the 42:49 mark on a scramble in front and Bove scored just 65 seconds later on a rush down the field with Sadak. Then, less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, Ruhl added to the scoring on a deflection of a Lubin shot.
The Dutchwomen will return to action on Saturday, when Union heads to #12 Babson College for a 1 p.m. meeting with the Beavers.
