SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-year
Sam Friedman set the Union College women's soccer single-game rookie scoring record with seven points on three goals and an assist as the Dutchwomen defeated Bard College by a 6-0 score in the teams' Liberty League opener on Wednesday night at College Park Field.
Playing in her sixth collegiate game, Friedman tallied a hat-trick and added one helper in the contest to give her seven points, the most ever by a Union first-year player and two points back of the school single-game record of nine set by Union Hall of Famers Missy Matusewicz '01 and Erika Eisenhut '06. She also is the first Dutchwoman to record a hat trick since Molly Gilchrist '15 in 2013.
In addition to Friedman's seven points, sophomore
Amanda Sgueglia scored two goals and added an assist for five points while first-year
Addie Zimmerman also scored for the Dutchwomen. Seniors
Bella Dworkin and
Erin O'Shea added two helpers each, while senior
Hanna Raymond and sophomore
Meghan Piser also added an assist apiece as well.
The scoring opened in the 29th minute when Friedman beat the Bard goalie with a shot that found the top corner off a pass from Dworkin that led to a breakaway chance. Four minutes later, Friedman found herself on another breakaway opportunity, as she dribbled past the goalie and eventually was able to put the ball into the back of the net. This would make it 2-0 at the half, as Union outshot Bard 14-1 in the opening 45 minutes of play.
In the second half it was more of the same for the Dutchwomen. Sgueglia scored her first collegiate goal in the 48th minute that came from passes by Friedman and O'Shea. In the 52nd minute Sgueglia netted her second tally of the game after a long ball from Raymond was headed forward by Dworkin for a breakaway chance that made it 4-0. Three minutes later in the 55th minute, Friedman scored her third of the game, capping her historic night and completing her hat trick, once again on a pass from O'Shea. In the 86 minute Zimmerman completed the scoring with her first collegiate goal, getting in front of an outlet pass and lofting the ball over the head of the Bard goalie from 20 yards out. Union out-shot Bard 14-0 in the second frame.
For the game, Union outshot Bard by a 28-1 margin, with junior keeper
Abby Mitty making one save to pick up the shutout victory.
The Dutchwomen (2-3-1, 1-0-0 Liberty League) get back to work on Saturday at 3 p.m. when St. Lawrence University comes to College Park Field for a Liberty League matchup.
