SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's soccer team and St. Lawrence University went head to head Saturday afternoon at College Park Field in a Liberty League matchup. St. Lawrence was victorious by a final of 2-1.
Senior
Lexi Cornacchia scored the lone goal in the loss for the Dutchwomen.
The Dutchwomen initiated an intense back and forth match as the teams spent the first 10 minutes of the game fighting for the first goal. St. Lawrence would strike first in the 11th minute when Emma Reynolds beat junior goalie
Abby Mitty. The Dutchwomen continued to play defensively in the first half of the game, persistently derailing St. Lawrence attacks to stay within striking distance. The Dutchwomen were outshot 7-6 in the first half as Mitty made two saves.
In the second half of the game the Dutchwomen had a rough start as St. Lawrence scored off a corner kick that floated into the back of the net in the 51st minute. It was not until the 74th minute that Cornacchia scored a goal off a volley that cut the Saints lead in half, 2-1. Mitty made three more saves in the second half and Union outshot St. Lawrence 13-7 in the half, but the Dutchwomen could not come up with the equalizer.
The Dutchwomen (2-4-1, 1-1-0) look forward to their next game on Monday at 7:00 pm when they take on Western New England in a makeup game at College Park Field.
