SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Ryan Lum led all players with 20 kills as Bard College earned its first-ever Liberty League women's volleyball victory with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 15-25, 25-22) win over Union College on Friday afternoon at Viniar Athletic Center.
Lum had a big game for the visitors, adding a team-best 16 digs and four aces to her match-high kill total. Junior
Julia Webster led the Dutchwomen with 12 kills on .476 hitting to go with an ace and three blocks, while senior
Jessica Siragusa added six kills and a match-best 17 digs.
Bard started out with its best set of the match, putting down 12 kills and hitting .360 in taking the opening frame. The Raptors used a 6-1 run to open up a 13-8 advantage and the Dutchwomen could not string together a run to get back into the frame, recording consecutive points only two times.
Union looked to be in good shape in the second stanza, as two aces by sophomore
Brooke Fleming led to five straight points on her serve and a 17-10 Union lead. The lead was still comfortable at 20-14 before Bard stormed back with nine of the final 11 points, helped by seven Union errors.
The Dutchwomen had their best set of the day in the third set, hitting .296 with 10 kills to extend the match. Holding a slight 10-9 edge, the home team scored at least one point on each player's serve the rest of the way, including five straight points on the serve of sophomore
Meredith Blinn, to cruise to a third-set win.
Union jumped out to an early 10-6 lead in the fourth frame, but the two teams continued to battle back-and-forth for much of the set, with the seventh tie of the stanza evening the score at 19. Lum then took over the match for the Raptors, recording her team's final six kills (including five in a row) to lead her team to the victory.
Union will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow with a 4 p.m. conference clash at Vassar College.
