POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College women's volleyball team came close in both the first and third sets, but the Dutchwomen ultimately dropped a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 26-24) match to Vassar College in Liberty League action at Kenyon Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Seven different players had at least two kills for Union (4-10, 0-2 Liberty League), led by sophomore
Keara Page with nine kills. Senior
Jessica Siragusa added six kills and a match-high 22 digs, while junior
Haley Kresch chipped in 26 assists.
Vassar took an early lead in the first set, but Union had the advantage for most of the frame before letting a late lead slip away. The Brewers led 9-6 before the Dutchwomen rattled off eight straight points to pull ahead 14-9. The visitors led by as many as six at 20-14 after a service ace by Siragusa, and still looked to be in great shape after a Vassar error put Union up 23-20. However, four Vassar kills and one Union error turned the tide and the Brewers escaped with a set-one win.
The second stanza featured five ties early on before Vassar made a run, scoring 11-of-13 points to turn a 5-all tie into a 16-7 advantage. The visitors fought off five set points to extend the frame, but the Vassar lead was too great to overcome.
Union again was strong in the third set, trailing for only one point in the early going and eventually building up a 14-7 lead following a block by Kresch and junior
Denesha Lafontant. The set tightened considerably, however, with the visitors maintaining a slight 21-20 lead. Kills by junior
Julia Webster and sophomore
Morgan Bohlke knotted the score at 23 after a brief Vassar run, but the home team recorded three of the final four points to close out the match.
Union will continue Liberty League play on October 8 with a Friday night match at Rochester Institute of Technology starting at 7 p.m.
