Field Hockey Falls to Ithaca in Conference Opener

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Four different players had multi-point games as Ithaca College defeated Union College by a 5-1 score in both teams' Liberty League opener on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Four players had a goal and an assist for Ithaca (6-2, 1-0 Liberty League), while senior Katherine Sadak scored the lone goal of the afternoon for Union (2-5, 0-1 Liberty League).

The first quarter featured a lot of play in the middle of the field, as the teams started slowly with the 11 a.m. start. The squads combined for just three shots but nine penalty corners, as the first 15 minutes elapsed without a score.

The offense came alive from both sides in the second stanza, as the teams combined for four goals. Amberly Christiansen opened the scoring 1:05 into the quarter by tipping home a Samantha Horowitz shot, and Morgan Mullen followed 3:36 later with her team-leading fifth of the year. Sadak got Union back within one with 5:36 left in the quarter, as a pass from the top of the circle by junior Jill Bove was swept forward by senior Emma Davis to a waiting Sadak at the goal mouth.

The one-goal deficit did not last long, however, as Elizabeth Pillow scored 2:14 later to regain Ithaca's two-goal edge headed into halftime. The Bombers outshot the Dutchwomen 9-2 in the pivotal second period, with senior Heather Poisson making six saves to keep her team in the game.

The visitors added one more goal in each of the final two quarters to account for the final score.

Ithaca finished the game with a 20-7 edge in shots on goal. Poisson made 12 saves in goal and sophomore Haley Dineen also recorded a pair of defensive saves for Union as well.

Union will head back out of conference on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. match at Russell Sage College.
